Application of geomembranes in highway engineering

Geomembranes are widely used in highway applications. In recent years, geomembranes have been more widely used in the projects I have been exposed to. Geomembranes are used in pavement structures. Paving at the bottom of the asphalt surface layer of old asphalt pavement and old cement concrete pavement or at the bottom of the asphalt surface layer of new roads can reduce or delay the reflection cracks of the asphalt surface layer of old roads.

It also reduces rutting and low-temperature cracking of asphalt pavement and improves the service life of the pavement. Asphalt pavement and cement concrete pavement are the main pavement structures for high grade highways, and they are two different mechanical functions of pavement structures.

There are two types of asphalt pavements:flexible-substrate asphalt pavements and semi-rigid-substrate asphalt pavements. In the early days, the main construction was the flexible bottom. In recent years, with the development of transportation, the base construction is mainly semi-rigid base asphalt pavement. This type of pavement construction has been used over a long period of time.

Structural and functional impairments such as vertical and horizontal cracking, rutting, poor leveling, and skid resistance often occur and are corrected with asphalt mixtures. The biggest problem with this type of overlay project is the rapid reflection of cracks from the original pavement to the pavement {1 typically 2 to 3 years}, causing damage to the structural layer of the overlay.

Cement concrete pavement use in the coming period of time will also appear 1 group of structural and functional damage, especially pavement joints lubrication and lumps appear like now, often use the method of asphalt mixture surface cover, but assuming that the pavement joints are not dealt with, will inevitably be reflected in the appearance of the roadway, shortening the service life of the skin layer.

New highway in the semi-rigid sublayer data, poor concrete sublayer data shorten cracks or expanding seams, but also now a major problem, how to reduce cracks, to avoid cracks on the surface of the road surface shooting, which is the key to the high quality of the Rheinland highway. Nowadays, the engineering community has been looking for some new information to deal with this problem more economically. It can be seen that in this case the excavated membrane was applied to the pavement structure with good results.
